Short story

So here is a short story I wrote, it is also the prologue for a story I am hoping to write soon.
This is the first time in a while I've let anyone read something I wrote so please give me your opinion.

“Sire, you need to leave now” Steven insisted.

The King turned to face him. “I cannot run like a coward. I must stay here and face her.”

Steven ran his hand through his brown hair and sighed, “Is there any way I can convince you otherwise?”

“No.” The king said firmly. “But I have a favour to ask you. Take Amos, Hugo, and Aria. And hide them at my sister’s place in the wood. Promise me you will protect them.”

The pleading in his eyes was hard to refuse. Steven lowered his voice and whispered, “She will not spare you.”

“I know.” The king said quietly. He walked over to the children. The twins were whispering to each other. And Aria sat on the floor confused by all the commotion.

The king knelt in front of the boys and said, “You and your sister will be going with Steven. He will take you to your Aunt’s. Take care of your sister for me.”

The young boys looked confused. “Will you be coming too.” Amos asked.

He knelt in front of them, and with tears in his eyes replied, “I do not know.”

The king lifted Aria from the floor. The toddler looked up at him with her big brown eyes, her usual smile was nowhere to be seen. The boys followed him as he handed her to Steven.

The king turned to his captains. “Aaron, Kara I want you to go with them.” He raised his hand as they stepped forward to protest, “If anything happens to me you must keep them safe, understood?”

Aaron bowed his head, “Yes, Sire.’

“Now all of you go before she reaches the castle.” He ordered.

Steven lead the way. He paused in the doorway and nodded to the king. Aaron and Kara followed.

The king walked to the window and looked down at the scene below.

Tabitha’s army had forced their way through the wall. With their sheer numbers defence had been useless.

Now Tabitha herself was heading for the castle door.

When she entered the room, four armed guards followed.

She made a mocking bow. “Thank you for the hospitality.”

The king turned to her. His face was tired and worn.

Tabitha looked around the room, “And where are your darling children?”

“Far away from you by now.” He answered.

Tabitha face twisted with rage. “Get this man out of my sight.” Two of the guards stepped forward and escorted him out.

Tabitha turned to the other two guards, “I want those kids found and brought to me now.”

She walked to the window and looked out. Then she smiled to herself. She was finally a Queen.
